![]() It is built into the very nature of the universe. And that’s when I first learned about evil. ![]() One of nature's wonders, gentlemen: mother and children dining upon mother and children. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. A very endearing sight, I’m sure you will agree, and even as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. I have told this to few people, gentlemen, and I suspect I never will again, but one day when I was a young boy on holiday in Uberwald I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. It's a soul-hurt, a body-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' or 'how very perceptive' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. You build up a whole armor, for years, so nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means someone can get inside you and mess you up. Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable.
